Amaterasu Ōmikami – The Tale of the Sun Goddess
Hello, I’m Amaterasu!
My name is Amaterasu Ōmikami, the Sun Goddess in Japanese mythology. I am the symbol of light that illuminates the heavens, and my name means “illuminating the heavens.” My role is to bring warmth and brightness to the people of Japan and beyond.
My Story
My story is told in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, ancient Japanese chronicles. One of my most famous tales is about the time I hid in the Heavenly Rock Cave (Ama-no-Iwato), plunging the world into darkness. With the help of other gods, I was coaxed out of the cave, restoring light to the world. This story teaches the importance of cooperation and hope.
My Family
- Susanoo: My mischievous younger brother, the god of storms.
- Tsukuyomi: My calm and elegant brother, the god of the moon.
- Izanagi and Izanami: Our parents, the creators of Japan and many gods.
